Description[edit | edit source]
August 1st, 1935
Your watch reads 8:41 AM when you awake on the shores of Faiyum, one of the glorious cities of mysterious Egypt. Faiyum is famous for lots of things: the rich sea air, the beautiful ruin- peppered Oasis, the new tourist attractions designed to draw in American and British money.
And of course, crocodiles. Your limited knowledge of Egyptology reminds you that this city was once called Crocodilopolis, and was home to the cult of Sobek, the cruel and temperamental crocodile god of the pharaohs.
You haven’t come for any of those things. On your bedside table sits a letter from Dr Abed Youssef--your Uncle Abed, whom you haven’t seen since you were a child, when he and his lovely wife Karine used to look after you while your parents were away. Something happened then, and a falling out between families drove the Youssefs back to Egypt.
Your parents never explained why. Uncle Abed was an odd duck obsessed with crocs and archaic home remedies. Perhaps they didn’t like him brewing potions for their children when they got sick at his house.
You’ve come in response to that letter. Dr Youssef has requested your presence in Faiyum for one reason or another, while he helps to battle the local epidemic, a vile disease that leaves its patients covered in scaly growths and twisted into horrific, inhuman shapes in their death throes. He claims one of his noxious home remedies has become a miracle cure for this disease.
You’ll believe that when you see it.
